The Danger of Prescription Drug Abuse

Vulnerability to drugs varies for each individual. While many people may trace it to family, peers, mental disorders, child abuse, neglect, and other influences, prescription drug abuse, as the term implies, represents dependency developed in response to treatment with a prescription drug. The danger lies in the habitual, seemingly valid use of prescription drugs which result in the development of tolerance and ultimately, addiction. Physicians play a pivotal role in the initiation and subsequent perpetuation of this kind of addiction. A drug seeking patient typically knows what to say in order to procure what he or she wants. Most doctors have little or no training in identifying such individuals. As with all drugs of abuse, prescription drug addiction is life-threatening and can lead to death when left unrecognized and untreated.
